If you haven’t heard of Thane Stenner and the Stenner Wealth Partners+ team of CG Wealth Management, you likely haven’t been paying much attention to the upper echelons of Canada’s wealth management industry.
At the heart of the team’s success is a strict adherence to a distinct approach: servicing a select number of ultra-high net worth clientele. It is this philosophy that enabled their exclusive practice to have an extraordinary 2022. Their client assets went from $725 million in March 2021 to over $1.75 billion today – a 141 percent increase.
The exclusive niche (clients with $10 million minimum account size or $25 million minimum net worth) has been a difference-maker in terms of setting the national/cross-border North American practice apart. Their experience in this ultra-high-net-worth category is now well known among the wealthiest people across Canada.
Because of this targeted strategy, one of the primary benefits (and their secret sauce) to their clients is extraordinary service. Stenner Wealth Partners+ has fewer clients nationally (46 current key clients) so the team can really get to know all of them exceptionally well over time. Composed of four Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA), three Discretionary Senior Portfolio Managers, one Chartered Investment Manager (CIM), one Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI), one Financial Management Advisor (FMA), one Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), one Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA), and one master’s in Business Administration (MBA), the service that the team of 15 wealth/investment professionals provides is very “high touch.” They have a customized client service plan that ensures they proactively connect with each client over 50 times a year, through email, Zoom calls, in-person meetings, reviews, research, phone calls, etc. It is very important for Stenner Wealth Partners+ to provide a superior client experience. And, most importantly, it is very important to clients. Each year, the team produces an annual scorecard with each client. They outline what they committed to and what they delivered on, and then ask for their feedback. Depending on their ongoing input, the team customizes their approach to that relationship moving forward.
Some of their clients are among the country’s wealthiest families and all have a net worth of anywhere from $25 million to $2.5 billion. In 2022, Stenner Wealth Partners+ had in-depth discussions with around 100 prospective clients, taking the time to really get to know them. Ultimately, they self-capped to onboarding eight new key client relationships for 2022. This approach ensures that they stay laser-focused on serving their existing clients.
During last year’s (2022) tough markets, their investment performance was excellent, an instrumental factor in winning new ultra-high-net-worth mandates. Their discretionary portfolios were down only 0.4 percent last year, net of fees, versus broader markets which were down between -15 percent to -33 percent (or more). The Stenner Wealth Partners+ team was very active in protecting client capital in a big downdraft/bear market. They shifted to a tactical-active strategy away from a long-term buy-and-hold approach. They built a methodology whereby they looked for undervalued sectors and used ETFs primarily to buy and sell them. In Q4 of 2021, they sold out of the technology sector and rotated in and out of other sectors, including commodities, energy, and short duration bonds in 2022.
Stenner Wealth Partners+ of CG Wealth Management is incredibly proud that the team was named winner of The National Philanthropic Investment Advisor Team of the Year as part of the 2022 Charitable Impact Foundation Awards. The team facilitated 303 charitable donations totaling $113.2 million over the past two years (172 charitable donations of $84.3 million in 2021 and 131 charitable donations of $28.9 million in 2022) for donors across Canada alone.
Thane also hosts a podcast produced by BNN Bloomberg (SmartWealth™ with Thane Stenner) where he interviews ultra-high-net-worth investors and those who work with them who share insights about wealth to his audience.
Although their unique approach is a rare one, they know it is working. Stenner Wealth Partners+ has indeed built the go-to wealth practice for the ultra-high net worth investor/family in the country.
