After navigating pandemic challenges, the Wealth Professional Awards made its eagerly awaited in-person return full of glitz and glamour
Thank you to everyone who took part in the annual Wealth Professional Awards. After a challenging year that tested the resilience of many wealth professionals and clients, these awards offer a true snapshot of the best and brightest in the wealth management and financial planning industry – those who have stepped up and offered a genuine reflection of excellence. The Wealth Professional Awards recognize the industry’s best, including financial advisors, brokerages, fund providers, BDMs and service providers. This year’s awards celebrated excellence in the wealth management profession across 23 prestigious categories. It was wonderful to see such strong support for the seventh annual Wealth Professional Awards. We would like to thank everyone who submitted a nomination and acknowledge our esteemed panel of judges for lending their time and expertise to the endeavour. The Wealth Professional Awards are produced by Key Media, which publishes Wealth Professional magazine and organizes a variety of awards ceremonies across Canada, where hundreds of professionals gather annually, in person or virtually, to acknowledge the best in their industry. We are proud to continue this tradition of celebrating excellence and would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and excellence awardees.
Thomas Caldwell, chairman of Caldwell Securities in Toronto, was presented with the prestigious Harbourfront Wealth Management Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Financial Planning Industry, joking that to be in the running for this honour, you have to “not die and not retire”. He added: “The beauty of the ‘don’t retire’ is that I’ve enjoyed this business so much. I enjoy coming to work every day. When you feel you’re helping people and families, it’s the X-factor beyond the money. You’re making a difference in the world and I’m so grateful for that opportunity. “So let me just say, ‘don’t retire’, and if you want to retire, you’re in the wrong job! Find something you like, that you love, that makes you come alive and stay in it as long as you can. And that’s coming from a man in his late 70s who still enjoys coming to work.” Treble winners Winnipeg-based Wellington-Altus Private Wealth was one of the night’s most prolific winners with three awards. It was a year of continued growth for the independent firm, which continues to add quality advisors to its roster. After winning The Equitable Bank Award for Multi-Office Advisor Network/Brokerage of the Year, Shaun Hauser, its co-founder and chief executive officer, praised the firm’s 600-plus strong staff. “We have a lot of people who don’t get accolades and a lot of people who are on the front lines of helping these great books of business transfer over in record time,” he said. “It’s all these people pulling on the rope together in unison that allows an award like this.” One of Wellington-Altus’ star advisors, Maili Wong, a senior wealth advisor and senior portfolio manager from The Wong Group in Vancouver, picked up the coveted Equiton Award for Canadian Advisor of the Year. She said: “It’s kudos for the team that helps to support me and what we do. Our goal is to create lasting positive impact for our clients, one client at a time, but it’s exponential because it’s not just about a moment in time, but the ripple effects from that.” Another one of the firm’s leading lights, Susyn Wagner, senior wealth advisor and senior portfolio for The Wagner Investment Management Team, was awarded the Avenue Living Asset Management Award for Portfolio/Discretionary Manager of the Year and described it as the award she is “proudest” to have won. Blazing a trail Edward Jones advisors also had a night to remember, scooping up three awards between them. Catherine Metzger-Silver, from Kentville, Nova Scotia, won the Harvest ETFs Award for Female Trailblazer of the Year and recalled how career progression meant overcoming some archaic attitudes. “I love that I was recognized for all the work that I’m doing, but I’m even more grateful for the fact that I’m able to do it. When I started, someone in the industry told me I wouldn’t get anywhere because I was a Barbie,” she said, noting how she was particularly pleased that she was recognized for her work supporting not only her clients and firm, but also her community. Sadeki Simpson, an Edward Jones advisor from Brantford, Ontario, served notice of her talent by winning the Nour Private Wealth Award for Rising Star of the Year. She told WP her success was a healthy reminder to stay on purpose and continue to serve her clients to the best of her ability. She added: “When I look at [the award], I see dedication, I see excellence, and it [tells me] excellence pays in the end.” Kristen Zubko, also an Edward Jones advisor, from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, was equally humbled to receive The Advocis Award for Young Achiever of the Year. Harvest toasts well-earned success The ETF space continues to grow, becoming the investment vehicle of choice for many advisors. Harvest ETFs, in particular, led the charge over the past 12 months, through successful new products like its Harvest Travel & Leisure Index ETF and success in its longstanding products like the Harvest Healthcare Leaders Income ETF. The company, which was founded in 2009, celebrated in style after winning this year’s ETF Provider of the Year. “The award was an honour for all of us, for the whole company, and it means a great deal to be recognized for that work because we’ve been at it for over a decade, and we’ve been building on an investment philosophy that I’ve espoused since I founded the company back in 2009,” he said. “It’s great to win. Not only as a firm, but for Canadian investors and advisors. We’re proud of the trust they put in us every time they buy one of our products. It’s also meaningful because it reflects how the industry is thinking of us.” In the night’s other standout award, Horizons ETFs president and CEO Steve Hawkins won CEO of the Year for the second time after also winning in 2018. He said that while the win was individual, it was down to his whole team and that he appreciated “being recognized by our peers from the perspective that Horizons is doing some amazing things”. The Schmidt Investment Group with CIBC Private Wealth received two awards – The Edward Jones Award for Excellence in Philanthropy and Community Service and the CI Global Asset Management Award for Holistic Advisory Team of the Year. When Leah Schmidt accepted the awards on behalf of her husband, Marvin – the group’s founder and a senior wealth advisor at CIBC – she told the audience it was “recognition that businesses can move things forward and make a difference”. In a similar vein, and with ESG an increasingly important part of people’s portfolios, Sonia LeRoy, an Ottawa senior wealth advisor for LeRoy Wealth Management Group with IPC Securities Inc., won the Sun Life Global Investments Award for Advisor of the Year – Responsible Investments. I’m on cloud nine “It means a lot to me because one of my objectives is to encourage the adoption of responsible investing, not just among my clients and the people they refer to me, but among Canadian investors in general, and it gives me an opportunity to spread the word.” Ida Khajadourian, a portfolio manager and investment advisor with Khajadourian Wealth Management in Richardson Wealth, won The ICM Asset Management Award for Advisor of the Year, Alternative Investments, while Franklin Templeton picked up two awards – Mutual Fund Provider of the Year and BDM/Wholesaler of the Year. Patrick Graham, its vice-president of regional sales, told WP: “Being recognized by your peers continues to elevate our industry, taking it to the next level and enhancing the way we continue to create wealth for Canadians. I’m on cloud nine!” Read on to learn about all the winners of the 2022 Wealth Professional Awards. Key Media and Wealth Professional would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and nominees, who truly exemplify excellence in the Canadian wealth management industry.
